BS in Agricultural Engineering from the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (1961), MSc (1972) and Ph.D. (1975) in Soil Science from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA, and postdocs at the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organization, Australia (1981) and Tropical Soils Program of North Carolina State University (1988/89). Began his career in 1963 performing studies on soil conservation at the former Department of Engineering and Mechanics of Agriculture - DEMA, an agency of the Department of Agriculture, São Paulo State, Brazil. In 1966 he joined the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (SP), acting as a researcher in the Section of Pedology Division of Soils, having here retired in 1992. In 1988 contributed as Assistant Professor in the area of soil to Unicamp. From 1992 to 1996 he was a visiting professor at the Department of Soil Science ESALQ/USP. From 1997 to 2001 he served as a visiting professor and researcher in the area of soils in ICIAG and IGUFU Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, where he began studies on silico-phytoliths in soils and plants of the Cerrado. From 2003 to 2004 he was a visiting researcher at UFLA (Lavras, MG), in 2006 he returned to ESALQ/USP (Piracicaba, Brazil), where he served as co-advisor of students graduate from the Department of Soil and finished production a textbook ("19 Lições de Pedologia") and translated another (Elements of the Nature and Properties of Soils, Brady and Weil). In the second half of 2012 he served in the Department of Soil Science UFRRJ collaborating in the pos grad. course Soil Survey and Soil Classification. In the 1st half of 2013 has served as Visiting Professor of ICA-UFMG (Montes Claros, MG).He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Soil Science (having been its first Editor in Chief) and the Executive Committee of the Brazilian System of Soil Classification EMBRAPA. Accumulated significant experience in soil studies, mainly in the following topics: pedogenesis, soil, mineralogy (including bio-minerals, such as silico-phytoliths), Chemistry of Soils, Classification and soils-geomorphology relationships.
