Helio holds a bachelor's degree in Astronomy from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1993), a master's degree in Astronomy from the University of São Paulo (1996), and a PhD in Astronomy from the University of São Paulo (2000). On the Board of the Brazilian Astronomical Society, he served as secretary (2008-2012), general secretary (2016-2017), and vice-president (2018-2020), as well as secretary of the Brazilian Astronomy Commission (2010-2016). He was the coordinator of the Graduate Program in Astronomy at UFRJ in two periods (2006-2010 and 2012-2014) and Director of the Valongo Observatory at UFRJ between 2015 and 2023. He is currently an associate of the International Astronomical Union, a full member of the Brazilian Astronomical Society, an associate professor III at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, President of the Brazilian Astronomical Society, and editor of the Revista Brasileira de Astronomia. He has experience in the field of Astronomy, with an emphasis on Galactic Chemical Evolution, working mainly on the following topics: galactic chemical evolution, stellar abundances, late-type stars, stellar ages, and stellar kinematics. He has received 3 awards and/or honors and discovered, in 2004, together with Steve Majewski, the Triangulum-Andromeda star cloud that orbits the Milky Way. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
