Rafael Alves de Souza

Rafael Alves de Souza has received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Universidade Estadual de Maringá (Brazil), Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Universidade de Campinas (Brazil) and Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering from Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil) with a sandwich research conducted at Universidade do Porto (Portugal). He has also attended post-doctoral activities at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Massachusetts Amherst and short research projects at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) and TU Delft (Nederlands). His research focuses on reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, strut-and-tie models, nonlinear analysis using finite element method and forensic engineering. He is member of ABECE (Associação Brasileira de Engenharia e Consultoria Estrutural), IBRACON (Brazilian Concrete Institute) and ACI (American Concrete Institute), serving as magazine reviewer for both institutions. In 2006, he received from IBRACON an Honor Mention by his thesis about strut-and-tie models. In 2017, he received the prize Fernando Luiz Lobo Barbosa Carneiro Destaque do Ano em Pesquisa de Concreto Estrutural from IBRACON. He was the co-head of Civil Engineering Department at University of Maringá and his research activities were supported by CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico).
