He graduated with a B.Sc. in Biology (1989) and a M.Sc. degree in Genetics (1992) from Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil, and received a Ph.D. degree in Entomology from University of Kansas (1998). Since 2000, he is Professor at the Department of Zoology of the Federal University of Paraná, in Curitiba, and has served as Chair of their Graduate Program in Entomology (2006-2008) and Chair of the Department of Zoologia (2021-2023). His research has focused in the phylogeny, systematics and biogeography of Hymenoptera, in particular of the bee fauna of the Neotropical region. He has published over 130 papers in refereed journals and edited five books, the most recent the second edition of the book "Insetos do Brasil: Diversidade e Taxonomia", a work that has been awarded the Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira prize (2014) by the Brazilian Society of Zoology. He has served as Secretary (2000-2004), Vice-President (2005-2008; 2023-2024), and President (2011-2012; 2019-2020; 2021-2022) of the Sociedade Brasileira de Entomologia (SBE). He has also been Editor-in-Chief (2013-2014) of the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia, published by SBE. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
