CV Lattes

Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Faculdade de Ciências Farmacêuticas (FCF)  (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal)
Birthplace: Brazil

I graduated in Pharmacy (1998) from the Federal University of Alfenas (UNIFAL-MG) with a specialization in Clinical Analysis (1999). I obtained a Master's degree in Drugs and Medicines from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of USP (2002) and a Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy of UFMG (2008), both in the area of #8203;#8203;Medicinal Pharmaceutical Chemistry. At the beginning of my doctorate, I began my experience as a professor in higher education at private universities, of which I highlight the University Center of Lavras (UNILAVRAS), where I also began the first activities of scientific initiation advising, most of them with scholarships financed by FAPEMIG. At this time, I proposed the first research projects involving semi-synthesis of new compounds from eugenol and other abundant and easily accessible natural products, with a view to discovering new antimicrobial agents. This line of research has been refined and deepened since I was admitted as a professor at UNIFAL-MG in 2010. At this institution, I am currently a full professor at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and I teach, at the undergraduate and stricto sensu graduate levels, in the areas of Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and its derivatives, such as Drug Synthesis and Spectrometric Analysis. I am a permanent professor of the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PPGCF) at this institution, participating or having been part of several committees and as vice-coordinator. I am involved in the supervision of master's and doctoral students, as well as supervising postdoctoral students. The research work that I supervise or co-supervise is aimed at the discovery of new active substances against Trypanosoma cruzi, Leishmania sp., Candida spp., fast-growing mycobacteria, Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria of clinical importance. I have had a special interest in conducting work related to the design and synthesis of new compounds capable of inhibiting mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial drugs, mainly efflux pumps. I am the creator and one of the people responsible for the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Research Laboratory (LQFar), the first space with this objective within the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, where students at various levels of training have passed through its 13 years of existence. I obtained funding for the maintenance of our projects at LQFar from FAPEMIG between 2016 and 2024. I completed a postdoctoral internship (2022) with the group at the Laboratory of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (Portugal), with which I established important collaborations that have allowed bilateral mobility actions, collaboration on projects and scientific publications. In Brazil, I maintain formal and frequent collaborations with research groups from the southeast (UFLA, UFSJ, UFOP, UFMG), south (UFSM), northeast (URCA, UFOB) and north (INPA, UFAM) regions. To date, I have published approximately 65 articles in indexed journals, supervised or co-supervised 7 doctoral theses and 10 master's dissertations, 50 scientific initiation papers and supervised 1 postdoctoral fellow. I would also like to highlight the recent publication of two book chapters: one in a textbook in the area of #8203;#8203;Medicinal Chemistry, a basic bibliography for Pharmacy courses throughout the country, and the other in a book dedicated to the state of the art of organic synthesis in Brazil, where I report, together with collaborators, on the discoveries related to our research with eugenol.
