José Alberto Caram de Souza DiasEmails: jose.dias@sp.gov.br; jcaramsouzadias@gmail.com.Scientific Researcher , Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC) / São Paulo State Government Agency for Agro-business Technology (APTA), Campinas, SP, BrazilJosé Alberto Caram Souza-Dias (PhD - Plant Pathology, Univ. Wisconsin-Madison, 1988; Pos-Doc 1996-7 at Dr. Steven A. Slack's lab, at Cornell Univ. Ithaca-NY; Sabbatical 2012, at Dr. Amy Charkowski's lab., at Univ. Wisconsin-Madison). Since his B.S in Agronomy (FAZ-MCG, Espt St. Pinhal, SP, in 1978), has been a Scientific Researcher working at the Phytosanitary Research and Development Center (PRDC) , Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC)/State of São Paulo Government Agency for Agro-business Technology, Campinas, SP (Brazil). He specializes in plant pathology, specifically in the plant virology, with focus on pathology, epidemiology, diagnoses and integrated control systems of potato (Solanum tuberosum) virus diseases and technology of virus-free seed-potato production. He has expertise in different insect transmitted viruses interaction, particularly on Luteoviruses (Potato leafroll virus - PLRV), Potyviruses (Potato virus Y - PVY/races), Gemimniviruses ( potato deforming mosaic virus species: Tomato yellow vein streak virus - ToYVSV, Tomato severe rugose virus - ToSRV), and, more recently, also Crinivirus (Tomato chloroses virus - ToCV). In his research, Dr. Caram Souza-Dias have been responsible on the development of innovative-creative devises and systems applied to viruses diagnose, bio-monitoring and large-scale, virus-free, seed-potato (mini)tuber production. His innovative "Sprout/Seed-potato Technology" (Brazilian patent INPI- 0604078-0 / C1 0604078-0) has been introducing potato tuber sprouts as a new seed-potato product (commodity) with advantages on transportation costs (lower weight) and high sanitary safety (low risk of soil-borne pathogens) . It been pointed out as a suitable-feasible, low cost, alternative system to produce seed-potato, by simply making use of tons of detached sprouts, a discarded-dumped " by-product" , usually generated by some major Brazilian basic seed- potato producers at the planting time of the imported seed-potato tuber stocks ( basic classes). Since mid 80's, this sprout/seed-potato technology has been increasing its application among seed-potato producers in Brazil and, more recently, since 2008, it has been also considered-evaluated by some Asian (China) and African nations (Mozambique, Benin), as shown in my blog: http://carambatatasemvirus.blogspot.com/ Full list of scientific work accomplished and published by Dr. José Alberto Caram de Souza Dias is available on his Curriculo Lattes CNPq.
