Scientist of Our State FAPERJ, former 1B scholarship holder from CNPq, with experience focused on the area of Marine Biodiversity, specialist in sponges (Phylum Porifera), with a preponderant role in taxonomy (250+ new taxa described until 01/2024), phylogeny, biogeography and bioprospecting. Main areas of work are in Brazil, Antarctica, Argentina, Chile and Peru. He has published more than 200 works and supervised around 30 postgraduate students. He has been area editor of the journal Zootaxa since 2006 and has been a member of the editorial committee of the World Porifera Database (www.marinespecies.org/porifera) since 2008. Graduated in Biology from UFRJ in 1987, he obtained a master's degree in Biological Sciences from USP in 1991, and a PhD in Biology from the Universiteit van Amsterdam in 1995. Post-doctorate from USP between 1995 and 1997. Associate professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro since 2014, having been an adjunct professor between 1997 and 2014.
