Marise Lazaretti Castro

Marise Lazaretti-Castro is Associate Professor in Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, at Escola Paulista de Medicina Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo (EPM-UNIFESP), Brazil, and the Head of Bone and Mineral Unit in the same University. She obtained her MD degree at EPM-UNIFESP in 1988 and a PhD degree in 1992 in the same university. While pursuing her PhD, she received a scholarship from Deutsch Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) for a sandwich-program at Heidelberg Universität, Germany, from 1988 to 1990. There, she studied in vitro models of cell cultures to investigate the effect of hormones on Calcitonin secretion and Vitamin D metabolites. In 2002, she became Senior Lecturer and in 2010 was appointed Associate Professor at UNIFESP. Since 2016 she is the Coordinator of Endocrinology Post-Graduation Program at EPM-UNIFESP, which has presently more than 60 MD and PhD students, working in different areas of Endocrinology and Diabetes. She has served as Head, Metabolic Bone Diseases Unit since 2002, coordinating specialized Outpatient Clinics in the School-Hospital of EPM-UNIFESP, teaching medicine students and residents, and mentoring many post-graduate students from all the country. Her main area of research is Bone and Mineral Metabolism and related diseases, with special interest on Vitamin D. She has served as scientific advisor for the Sao Paulo State Secretary of Health for osteoporosis and Vitamin D policy on many occasions. Dr. Lazaretti-Castro participates activey in other professional and scientific organizations, such as Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM), where she was vice-president from 2013-2014 and organized many regional and national Scientific Meetings. In 2013 she coordinated the first Brazilian guidelines for assessment of Vitamin D deficiency and supplementation. With other colleagues, she founded in 2012 the Brazilian Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ABRASSO), where she was Scientific Director from 2015-2016 and now serves as President, 2017-2018.
