Birthplace: Brazil

I am an Associate Professor (tenured) at the University of São Paulo. I hold a postdoctoral degree in Biomedical Informatics from Stanford University (2008), a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from the University of Kent at Canterbury (1995), a Masters degree in Microelectronics from the University of Campinas (1991), and a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Bahia (1988). I serve as an Ad Hoc consultant for FAPESP, CNPq, CAPES, and the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and a reviewer for the Bioinformatics (Oxford) journal. I was a CNPq research productivity fellow for nine years and received research grants from CNPq and FAPESP.My research focuses on applying artificial intelligence, particularly Semantic Web and Large Language Models (LLMs), to address biomedical and life sciences challenges, enabling automated interpretation of biomedical data. I have collaborated with Hospital Sírio-Libanês on disease detection from electronic health records, with BMIR-Stanford University on semantic annotations of medical images, and with Embrapa on data analysis for sustainability. With over 30 years of experience in computer science and engineering research, I work with distributed client/server and Web applications, leveraging technologies such as Web services, ontologies (Semantic Web, OWL), and Large Language Models (LLMs). I have expertise in programming languages such as C, C++, Clojure, Java, and JavaScript across Linux, Windows, and Mac platforms. Additionally, I have experience managing and operating research laboratories in this field. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
