Rodrigo W. Alves de Souza, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His research focuses on striated muscle physiology and cytoprotection, exploring how cell injury and heme metabolism contribute to tissue protection and disease prevention. Dr. Alves de Souza began his scientific career investigating skeletal muscle regeneration during his undergraduate studies in Brazil. He later earned a Master's and Ph.D. in Cell Biology, where he studied the impact of physical exercise on muscle physiology under conditions of heart failure. Following his postdoctoral training at the University of São Paulo and a research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, he joined the faculty at HMS. His work has led to key discoveries in muscle physiology, heme signaling, and cytoprotective mechanisms. His research investigates the molecular pathways linking heme metabolism to the prevention of chronic diseases. Beyond research, Dr. Alves de Souza is dedicated to mentoring. He remains committed to fostering innovation in biomedical research and translating scientific discoveries into therapeutic strategies. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
