Dr. Prieto holds a Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of São Paulo (1991) and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (Biochemistry) from the Institute of Chemistry at the University of São Paulo (2002). Currently, Dr. Prieto serves as a scientific researcher at the Butantan Institute, where he holds the position of vice-director of the Genetics Laboratory. He teaches an Introduction to Basic Microbiology course. His expertise lies in the field of Biochemistry, with a focus on Molecular Biology and Protein Chemistry. His primary research interests include bioactive polypeptides, animal toxins and their targets, cellular receptors and their ligands, molecular interactions, molecular biodiversity of vertebrate and invertebrate toxins and their bioactive peptides, recombinant DNA technology such as cloning and expression, cDNA libraries of venomous organisms, RT-PCR, analysis and production of antigens and immunobiologicals. He primarily works on topics related to toxins, neurotoxins, cloning and purification of proteins, bioactive peptides, recombinant antigens, and serology, with a focus on species like Crotalus, Micrurus, Cnidarians, and Hymenoptera.
