CV Lattes

Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Instituto de Física (IF)  (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal)
Birthplace: Brazil

He has a bachelor's degree in physics (1986) and a master's degree in nuclear physics (1989) from the University of Sao Paulo (SP, Brazil). His Ph.D. degree in physical sciences was obtained at the University of Gent (1994) in Belgium. Between 2007 and 2008 he worked as postdoc reserarcher at the Louisiana Accelerator Center of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (USA). Currently, he is a professor of physics at the Institute of Physics at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (RS, Brazil). He is the coordinator of the accelerators at the Ion Implantation Laboratory. He is an active supervisor in the graduate programs in physics (PPG-Fis) and materials science (PPG-CiMat) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. He was appointed vice-coordinator of the PPG-CiMat between 2014 - 2015. He is an invited fellow of the graduatie program of teaching in sciences and mathematics at the University of Passo Fundo (RS). Up to now, he has supervised 6 PhDs, 10 masters and several undergraduate students. Moreover, he acted as co-supervisor in 3 PhDs thesis and 3 masters. Finally, he supervised several pos-doc students working at the Ion Implantation Laboratory at IF-UFRGS. Finally, he presents seminars in book stores and high schools for the diffusion of science at elementary levels. He published over 190 scientific papers covering the fields of photonuclear reactions and solid state physics with emphasis on ion-matter interaction. His h-factor is 30. He belongs to the international scientific committees of PIXE and Bio-PIXE. In 2013 he organized the 13th International Conference on Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE 2013) held in the city of Gramado (RS - Brazil) with more than 80 participants from all over the world. He worked as a Guest-Editor of the Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research B and published the proceedings of the PIXE 2013 conference. In 2018 he organized the 9th International Symposium on BioPIXE in the city of Iguazu Falls (PR - Brazil). Finally, he has participated in several conferences as an invited speaker. During the period between 2009 and 2014 he led the project Ion Microprobe in Biomaterials sponsored by CAPES with a total budget of about 1 million US dollars. Moreover, he keeps active research projects sponsored by local institutions like CNPq and FAPERGS and, at an international level, by IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). He works with Brazilian research centers and keeps collaboration with countries like Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia among others. He has been working with ion beam analytical techniques like PIXE (Particle-Induced X-ray Emission), Micro-PIXE, RBS (Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry) and MeV-SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry). His research program includes: 1) photonuclear physics; 2) energy-loss of swift ions and molecules in thin films and oxides; 3) X-ray production cross sections induced by heavy ions; 4) photoluminescence of AsIn nanoparticles; 5) elemental composition of foodstuff; 6) diffusion of metals from cans to foodstuff; 7) the role of elements in the process of memory; 8) biomonitoring studies through the analysis of organic tissues from biomonitors; 9) diffusion of elements in porous silicon; 10) wetability of surfaces modified by energetic ions; 11) micropatterning of polymers; 12) forensic studies of food, pharmaceuticals and food supplements.
