Birthplace: Cuba

He holds a degree in Biochemistry with a specialization in Phytovirology, awarded in 1993 (Revalidated Bachelor of Biochemistry by UEM/PR). Subsequently, he earned a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Havana in 2004 (Revalidated Molecular Biology by UnB/BSB). His doctoral research focused on the molecular and biological characterization of a novel begomovirus species affecting tomato plants. Currently, he serves as a postdoctoral fellow at the Applied Molecular Biology laboratory of the Biological Institute of São Paulo. Prior to this role, he worked as a visiting researcher at the Sylvio Moreira Citriculture Centre in São Paulo, Brazil, from 2013 to 2015. Additionally, he led the phytopathology group at the Instituto de Investigaciones en Fruticultura Tropical (IIFT) in La Habana, Cuba, from 2009 to 2012. His expertise extends to two postdoctoral studies at the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in La Habana, Cuba. The first, conducted from 2004 to 2006, delved into posttranscriptional gene silencing for plant virus resistance. The second, from 2007 to 2008, focused on developing molecular tools to enhance the expression levels of recombinant proteins in transgenic plants, specifically plantibodies.Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in postgraduate course supervision. His research in plant molecular biology emphasizes plant virology, covering various aspects such as virus-plant interaction, identification, and characterization of plant virus diversity and variability using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques, induction of resistance through gene silencing, molecular diagnostics, phytopathology, plant transgenics, and the molecular biology of geminiviruses, kitaviruses, and plant rhabdoviruses. Furthermore, he contributes to the academic community as a member of the editorial board for Frontiers in Microbiology and Frontiers in Plant Science. Recognized for his expertise, he has served as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals. He is an active participant in the study groups dedicated to the Kitaviridae and Rhabdoviridae families within the International Committee on Viral Taxonomy (ICTV). (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
