Earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1991, completed a postgraduate diploma in Mental Health at the UFRJ Psychiatry Institute in 1993, a Master's degree in Psychology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1996, and a PhD in Communication from the same university in 2002. During the PhD, also attended the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto, Canada, in 2001, under the supervision of Derrick DeKerckhove, supported by a CNPq sandwich PhD scholarship. Completed the first postdoctoral fellowship at The Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University, NYC, USA (2015/2016), funded by a FAPESP scholarship, and a second postdoctoral fellowship at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, England, as a Senior Visiting Professor funded by CAPES. Currently serves as a professor at the School of Social Communication and the Postgraduate Program in Communication at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, directed the ESPM MEDIA LAB (ESPM-SP; 2010-2016), and is an associate researcher at the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto, Canada, and at the I+D+C Museum at Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. Also co-founded and served as president of ABCiber - Brazilian Association of Cyberculture Researchers (2012-2013 and 2013-2015 biennia). Authored the books "Extending McLuhan - From Village to Global Web" (Sulina, 2011) and "Communication in the Post-Media Era - Technology, Mind, Body, and Neuromedia Research" (Ed. Sulina, 2021), and edited other works on digital culture, including "Digital Culture Trash" (e-Papers, 2007), "ArtTechnology", vol 1 (Buquidigital, 2012) and vol 2 (Univ. Complutense de Madrid, 2014). The research and studies primarily focus on communication technologies, media languages, sound studies, studies on media materialities, and the Toronto School of Communication, particularly the work of Marshall McLuhan and, recently, rhythm analysis and elemental media.
