Renan Ruiz holds a Ph.D. in History and is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Sociology graduate program at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences at the State University of Campinas (Universidade Estadual de Campinas - UNICAMP), where he is developing the research project "Jazz and Authoritarianism in Brazil: Cases and Experiences from the Military Dictatorship (1964 - 1985)," funded by FAPESP. He completed his undergraduate degree (2013), master's (2017), and Ph.D. (2023) in History at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at the São Paulo State University (Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP), where he defended the dissertation titled "'The New Direction for Popular Music': the Vanguarda Paulista Instrumental (São Paulo Instrumental Avant-garde) between the Continuities and Ruptures of Jazz in Brazil (1920 - 1980)." With several published articles and presentations in Brazil and abroad, Ruiz conducts research focused on the history of Brazil and the history of music, addressing the following themes: popular music, military dictatorship, New Jazz Studies, Brazilian jazz, instrumental music, modernism, and the sociology of music.
