João holds a degree in Public Administration from Fundação Getulio Vargas - SP (1996), a Master's degree in Economics from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (2000), and a PhD in Economics from Stanford University (2005). Currently, he is a part-time professor at the School of Economics of São Paulo, Fundação Getúlio Vargas (EESP-FGV), and a partner at Opportunity Asset Management. He was an assistant professor (2004-2010) and associate professor (2010-2013) at the Department of Economics at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, and a full professor at Insper (2014-2022). Throughout his academic career, he served as the deputy secretary of the Brazilian Econometric Society, an affiliate member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, founder and first coordinator of the Latin American Crime and Policy Network (AL CAPONE) of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA), CNPq productivity scholarship holder, level 1D, an overseas researcher of FAPESP, visiting scholar at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and visiting fellow at the Kennedy School of Government, both at Harvard University. He was a regular columnist for Caderno Mercado of Folha de São Paulo. In the public sector, he held positions such as Special Advisor for Microeconomic Reforms, Secretary for Promotion of Productivity and Advocacy of Competition, and Secretary for Economic Policy, all at the Ministry of Finance (2017-2018); he ended his public service as Deputy Governor for Licensing and Resolution at the Banco Central do Brasil.
