Shiga toxins (Stx) produced by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are the most potent cytotoxins of type AB5, found as two distinct types (Stx1 and Stx2) and subtypes, causing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), characterized by thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and renal failure, which can cause death.
