Family physician and senior researcher with a consolidated career in Mental Health, Mindfulness, Health Promotion, and Supported Self-Care in chronic conditions. I am a Tenured Associate Professor at the Paulista School of Medicine Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), where I supervise Masters and Doctoral students in Public Health, as well as postgraduate candidates at FEARP-USP and FMRP-USP. My academic background began with a degree in Medicine from FMRP-USP (2000), preceded by studies in Business Administration at Fundação Getulio Vargas FGV-EAESP (incomplete undergraduate program, 19911992). I later earned a PhD in Pathology from USP (2005), becoming the first Family and Community Physician in the state of São Paulo to achieve this title, followed by international specializations in Mindfulness, Mental Health, and Supported Self-Care at the University of Zaragoza (20122013) and the University of Technology Sydney (20232024), where I currently serve as Honorary Visiting Professor at the School of Public Health. Since 2025, I have also been an Affiliated Researcher at the Contemplative Studies Centre, University of Melbourne, Australia.I am certified in Family and Community Medicine and in Sports and Exercise Medicine, and I was the first Brazilian physician to become a certified Mindfulness instructor, trained by the Breathworks for Mindfulness Foundation (United Kingdom, 2011). I am a CNPq Productivity Fellow (Level 1D), awarded by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development in recognition of my research trajectory. Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to integrating mental health care into primary care and community contexts, combining scientific research, clinical practice, and educational initiatives to address anxiety, depression, chronic stress, and other prevalent conditions.I hold distinguished positions as Senior Fellow of the International Primary Care Research Leadership Programme at the University of Oxford and of the International Complementary and Integrative Medicine Research Leadership and Capacity Building Program at ARCCIM, Australia. I am a member of the Advisory Council of the International Society for Contemplative Research (ISCR), the Advisory Board of ACCESS MBCT, and a Founding Member and Consultant of The Self-Care Observatory (The Global Self-Care Federation). Additionally, I act as International Consultant on the EDI Task Force of the British Association for Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA), United Kingdom.I lead Mente Aberta Brazilian Center for Mindfulness and Health Promotion, the first research and extension center in Brazil dedicated to this field (https://mindfulness.unifesp.br/), and coordinate the Specialization Course in Mindfulness at UNIFESP. I was a Consultant and Signatory of the Bangkok Charter, developed at the 6th Global Conference on Health Promotion organized by the World Health Organization in 2005. My research includes randomized controlled trials and implementation studies on mental health promotion and self-care interventions, with national and international recognition: I have received awards such as the Galeno Prize (2004 and 2010), the Honorable Mention from the Brazilian Navy, the Camino de Santiago Award (Spain), and distinctions for most cited and most viewed papers in journals such as PLOS One and JMIR mHealth and uHealth.My collaborations span leading institutions in Brazil and abroad, including Harvard University, University of Oxford, USP, the Universities of Zaragoza and Valencia, University of Melbourne, and UTS Sydney. I have extensive experience in Mental Health, Preventive Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine, Primary Health Care, Implementation Science, Longevity, and Digital Health Innovation.
