holds a bachelor's degree (1967), a master's (1968) and a doctorate in Mathematics (1971) from the University of Cambridge. Since 2018 is Network Scientist at the Brazilian National Research and Education Network, RNP. From 1994 until his retirement in 2014, he was a Full Professor at the Computing Institute of the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), and, between 2002 and 2018, was also Director of Research and Development (initially Innovation) of RNP. He has experience in Computer Science, focusing on Numerical Mathematics, Distributed Systems and Computer Networks, es[eciallu in network architectures and network engineering. In addition to his academic activities in Brazil since 1971, in 1974, at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), he began his activities related to providing computing services, which grew to include distributed computing and networks in the 1980s, when he was director of the computer science department at PUC-Rio. In 1986, in response to the new academic networks in the USA, especially the NSFNET (Internet), he began to study how to integrate PUC-Rio into this environment. As a consequence, he played a part in the collective efforts to deploy networks, and especially the Internet, in Brazil, having instigated the convening of two important meetings in 1987, the first at the Congress of the Brazilian Computer Society (CSBC) in Salvador in July, and the second, with the support of CNPq, at the University of São Paulo (USP) in October. It can be said that this second meeting was the seed from which the Brazilian National Research Network (RNP) was born as a project two years later. In 1990, he was invited to participate in the coordination of RNP, with responsibilities for research and development, and remained until 1993. In 2001, he returned to RNP, where he became Director of Innovation, a post renamed in 2009 as Director of Research and Development, on secondment from UFF, where he continued until 2014 to teach courses and supervise postgraduate students. Since 1989, he has been involved in designing and building computer networks on many different scales: department, campus, metropolitan area, national and international. Amongst the pioneering projects of which he helped to design are the corporate networks of PUC-Rio e UFF, the metro network in Rio de Janeiro (Rede-Rio) in its Bitnet and initial Internet phases, the testbed network of Project GIGA, the metro network in Belém (MetroBel), and some of the versions of the RNP national and RedClara (Latin American regional) networks. As a diretor of RNP his activities included overseeing software development, with the participation of university research groups, providing Advanced Internet services for RNP users. In addition he played a role in the technological evolution of the networks, including the use of lightpaths for demanding applications, and planning the next version of RNP's national network planned for 2011, with dynamic lightpath provisioning alongside IP routing. He also sought to engage RNP and the national research community in networking in international collaboração projects, in the area of Future Internet, where RNP exercises an important role in the Project Future Internet research/experimentation between BRazil and Europe (FIBRE), jointly funded by CNPq and the EC (FP7) between 2011 and 2014, which built an operational Future Internet testbed for community use. Michael's contributions to the devolopment and evolution of the Internet have been recognised by two recent awards: - in September 2018 he was received the lifetime achievement award of LACNIC (Latin American and Caribbean Network Information Centre) - in September 2019 was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame, of the Internet Sociery (ISOC) - in May 2020 he received the prize "Highlight in Internet Governance in Brazil" from the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGIbr) (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
