Full Professor and researcher at the School of Nursing at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq 1) productivity scholarship, FAPEMIG Researcher. She has a Post-Doctorate from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in health assessment, a PhD in Public Health from the State University of Campinas (2001), a Master's Degree in Public Health / Epidemiology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, a Degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, and a medical residency in Pediatrics and Public Health. She worked as General Coordinator and Director of the Department of Surveillance of Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries and Health Promotion, Ministry of Health of Brazil for 12 years and coordinated for the Ministry of Health, national surveys such as the National School Health Survey (PeNSE 2009, 2012, 2015), Surveillance of Risk Factors by Telephone Surveys (Vigitel) between 2006 to 2015, National Health Survey (PNS 2013), Surveillance of Accidents and Violence (VIVA 2005 to 2014). She coordinated the "Strategic Action Plan to Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) in Brazil, 2011-2022". She has been a member of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Scientific Committee in Seattle, United States, since 2016, and has coordinated the GBD Brazil Research Group since 2018. At UFMG, she coordinates the research group on the Observatory of Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries. She participates in the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (WHO/STAG 2024-2025) and in the PAHO/WHO Strategic Advisory Group on Noncommunicable Diseases and Risk Factors (SAG-NCDs) (2024-2026). She has over 850 publications on the topic of NCDs, population surveys, risk factor analyses, mortality studies, health assessment, and others. She has partnerships with numerous national and international researchers and collaborative networks. She has completed the supervision of over 76 students in master's, doctoral, postdoctoral and scientific initiation programs. Specialist in Public Health, working mainly in the following areas: epidemiology, surveillance of non-communicable diseases, surveillance of injury and violence, Global Burden Diseases, health promotion, artificial inteligence, evaluation of services and private insurance. She was Associate Editor of the Journal of Ciencias e Saude Coletiva (2023 and 2024) and an associate editor of the Brazilian Journal of Epidemiology, since 2016. In July 2023, she was honored by the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil with the Amélia Império Hamburger Women in Science Award, an initiative that aims to honor scientists who have excelled in their fields of activity. In 2024, she received the Medal of Inconfidencia, the highest honor of the Government of Minas Gerais. In the ranking of female scientists of 2023 and 2024, prepared by the academic portal Research.com, she was the highest ranked Brazilian scientist, among the 1000 female scientists in the world. In the 2024 AD Cientifics Index ranking of Latin America, she occupies Position no. 66 in the Latin American Ranking and No. 29 in Brazil.
