Birthplace: Brazil

Francisco J. Profito is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. He obtained both his MSc (2010) and DSc (2015) in Mechanical Engineering from the same institution, where he developed mathematical models and advanced numerical simulation tools to predict the tribological behaviour of mixed elastohydrodynamically lubricated contacts, applicable to journal and sliding bearing systems, as well as to piston ring-cylinder liner assemblies. In addition to his academic achievements, he has three years of industry experience as a researcher at the MAHLE Research Centre in Brazil (2008-2011), where he worked on automotive engineering projects. During his doctoral studies, he spent one year as a PhD researcher in the Tribology Group at Imperial College London (2014-2015), further enriching his international research experience. His academic accomplishments have been recognised through two prestigious thesis awards from the University of São Paulo (USP/Brazil) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES/Brazil). His current research interests lie at the intersection of tribology, energy efficiency, and sustainability, with particular emphasis on computational tribology, lubrication, and contact mechanics applied to multibody mechanical systems. He is also exploring innovative solutions in areas such as sliding bearings, surface topography characterisation, and the application of machine learning in tribology. His work spans several engineering domains, including automotive engines, reciprocating hermetic compressors, harvesting machines for agriculture, and wind turbine tribology, aiming to enhance the performance and durability of systems across diverse engineering applications.
