She holds a degree in Natural History from Universidade Santa Úrsula (1971) and a PhD in Sciences (Microbiology) from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1976). She did postdoctoral work in (1) Carbohydrate Chemistry, using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy (1977/78-National Research Council-Canada); (2) Glycobiology (1978/1979-Department of Biochemistry, University of California, Berkeley, US). Visiting Researcher, 1987-1988-INSERM, France, in Protein Chemistry. In 2011/2012, she did a senior internship abroad (CAPES, Brazil) on the characterization of glycophenotypes by Mass Spectroscopy. She was awarded the following awards: (1997) International Research Scholar, Howard Hughes Medical Institute; (2001) National Order of Scientific Merit - Commander, Federal Government; (2004) L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science, Paris, France; (2007) Biology TWAS Award; (2011) Special Honor, Medical Sciences - 120 Years Jornal do Brasil, Brazilian Academy of Letters.Currently, she is Professor Emeritus at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; and until 2025, she was a Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences; a Full Member of the TWAS-World Academy of Sciences; and from 2021 to 2024, she was a Member of the MAC (Membership Advisory Committee) of the World Academy of Sciences. She was Regional Vice President (RJ) of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences from 2016 to 2021.She has experience in Glycobiology and Biochemistry of Microorganisms. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
