Birthplace: Brazil

Vinícius de Carvalho is a postdoctoral researcher at the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) for the project "AI-Based Cloud Resource Optimization Aimed at Reducing Carbon Emissions." Vinícius obtained his PhD in Computer Engineering with an emphasis on artificial intelligence, also at the Polytechnic School of USP. During his PhD, he was supervised by Professor Jaime Sichman (Poli-USP) and spent a one-year research stay at the University of Nottingham under the supervision of Prof. Ender Özcan. His PhD thesis, completed in 2022, focused on the application of multi-agent systems and social choice theory in the development of hyper-heuristics for multi-objective optimization problems. Before his PhD, he earned a master's degree in Informatics from the Federal University of Paraná. During this period, his research focused on the development of multi-objective optimization techniques to address software engineering problems, particularly the problem of establishing module sequences in the context of software testing, under the supervision of Prof. Silvia Regina Vergilio. As an undergraduate, Vinícius earned a bachelor's degree in Information Systems from the University of Western São Paulo (Unoeste). He has years of industry experience as a data engineer, machine learning engineer, and developer in both Brazilian and American companies. He has supervised two students in the specialization program of the Continuing Education Program (PECE/USP) and is currently co-supervising a master's student in Computer Engineering at USP. Along with Professor Jaime, he currently teaches Machine Learning in the MBA Data Science Analytics for Operations program. Since 2023, he has been involved in the THUS the Future (Techno-Human Systems of the Future - Foundations in Artificial Intelligence, Control, and Computing) initiative (https://thus.ime.usp.br/), one of the key areas of information technology within the IRC USP-CNRS collaboration. Specifically, he contributes to CHAINS (Sustainable Software Supply Chains) (https://thus-chains.github.io/), a research group coordinated by Gerson Sunye (Nantes Université) and Marcelo Eler (EACH, USP).His research focuses on metaheuristics, multi-agent systems, cloud task optimization, reinforcement learning, and software testing.
