Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP). Campus São Paulo. Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM)  (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal)
Birthplace: Brazil

I earned my degree in Medicine from the prestigious Federal University of São Paulo in 2004, followed by a comprehensive medical residency in Ophthalmology at UNIFESP, culminating in 2007. My dedication to advancing in the field led me to specialize in retina within the Department of Ophthalmology at UNIFESP and subsequently pursue a doctorate through a unique Molecular Biology/Ophthalmology dual program at UNIFESP, which I successfully completed in 2010.To broaden my horizons and enrich my expertise, I embarked on a postdoctoral journey in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, involving the renowned Schepens Eye Research Institute, and Tufts Medical School. This transformative experience has not only shaped my academic outlook but has also empowered me to contribute significantly to the field.Presently, I am honored to serve as a Professor in the esteemed Department of Ophthalmology at both UNIFESP and Tufts Medical School. As the Head of the Retina Service at UNIFESP and the Medical Director at Opty Ophthalmology Group, I take pride in leading initiatives that advance patient care and contribute to the development of innovative solutions. My leadership extends beyond the clinic, as evidenced by my tenure as the president of BLOSS (Brazilian Laser Ophthalmology Surgical Society). Additionally, I am privileged to be an affiliate member of both the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Academy of Medicine, reflecting my commitment to the highest standards of excellence in the field. My primary focus revolves around the treatment of retinal degenerative diseases, where I leverage cutting-edge approaches, including anti-angiogenic drugs and retinal stem cells. I am deeply invested in pushing the boundaries of medical technology and have actively contributed to the development of novel imaging technologies for retinal visualization, such as optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and the integration of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology. In essence, my journey and contributions underscore a relentless pursuit of excellence in Ophthalmology, driven by a passion for advancing patient care, fostering innovation, and contributing meaningfully to the scientific community.
