Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Brasilia (1973), Master's Degree in Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology) from the University of Brasilia (1975) and Ph.D from the Université de Paris VII (1981). Researcher of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation; from 2001 to 2017 Director of the Carlos Chagas Institute (Fiocruz-Paraná). Training in Molecular Biology, with emphasis in Molecular Parasitology, working mainly on the following topics: Trypanosoma cruzi differentiation, regulation of gene expression in parasites, functional genomics and development of diagnostic inputs. Former president of the Brazilian Society of Protozoology (SBPz) between 2006 and 2008 and the Brazilian Society of Genetics (SBG) in 2013 and 2014. Member of the Genetic Advisory Committee of CNPq and the editorial staff of the journals Trends in Parasitology and Gene. Coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT) for Diagnosis in Public Health. Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, was awarded in 2006 with the National Order of Scientific Merit in the Comendador Class, in 2018 in the Grand Cross class, in 2010 awarded in the Comendador Class with the Order of Medical Merit and in 2011 received the Samuel Pessoa Medal of the Brazilian Society of Protozoology (SBPz). Winner of the Almirante Alvaro Alberto 2017 Award, granted by CNPq in partnership with the Brazilian Navy and the Conrado Wessel Foundation. Member of the CNPq Deliberative Council since 2017.
