Sidnei Paciornik

He holds a bachelor's degree in Physics (1981) and Electrical Engineering (1983), a master's degree (1984) and a doctorate (1988) in Physics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, and a postdoctoral degree from the National Center for Electron Microscopy at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (1996). He is a Full Professor at the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering (DEQM) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. He has experience in the area of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, with emphasis on Structure of Metals and Alloys, Composite Materials and Microstructural Characterization. He has been working mainly on the following topics: digital microscopy, image analysis, characterization of iron ore and its agglomerates, optical and electron microscopy, x-ray microtomography and machine learning. Coordinator of Image Analysis and Digital Microscopy Group which includes the Digital Image Processing, Digital Microscopy, Particle Characterization and X-ray Microtomography Laboratories of DEQM/PUC-Rio. He was coordinator of the PIBIC and PIBITI (CNPq) programs at PUC-Rio between 2004 and 2018. Between August 2014 and December 2020, he served as Vice Dean of Development at the Scientific Technical Center. He was Dean of the same Center between 2020 and 2024. Member of several national and international scientific associations. Member of the E4-Metallography committee of the American Society for Testing and Materials and Fellow of the Alpha Sigma Mu Society. Between January 2015 and August 2024 he was a Scientist of Our State, funded by FAPERJ, having been awarded again for the period 2026-2028. Between 2018 and 2019 he was a visiting researcher at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin, Germany. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
