Juliana M Ferreira has a Ba in Biological Sciences and has masters and doctorate degrees in Genetics, all from the University of Sao Paolo, USP. Since 2005 she has been focusing on studying wildlife forensics, with emphasis on Genetics. For this reason she has received training on the issue at the USFWS National Forensics Laboratory every year from 2005 until 2013, first as a volunteer and later as a visiting scientist. Her PhD thesis (under the supervision of Prof Dr João Stenghel Morgante) was dveeloped in collaboration with Dr Mary B Curtis, senior Geneticist of the institution. Currently, Dr Juliana Machado Ferreira is the Executive Director of the organization Freeland Brasil, the south American branch of Freeland Foundation, an internationally respected counter wildlife and human trafficking organization. Freeland Brasil works using a three-pillar approach, which are inter-related and interdependent: (1) Education and Awareness to reduce demand for wildlife and parts and products; (2) Scientific research and capacity building to support law enforcement and (3) Public policy and international articulation to institutionalize the combat agains wildlife trafficking. Dr Ferreira was nominated a 2009 TED Fellow, 2010-2012 TED Senior Fellow and gave a talk at the 2010 TED conference which is available at their TED.com website. She was also laureate a 2014 National Geographic Emerging Explorer and in 2016 she received an award for women in Science and exploration by the organization Wings WorldQuest.
