Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ) (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal) Birthplace: Brazil
Has an undergraduate degree in Agronomy (2008) at Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Master/Msc (2012), and Doctorate/Ph.D. (2016) in Genetics and Plant Breeding at "Luiz de Queiroz" College of Agriculture, from the University of São Paulo (ESALQ/USP), Brazil. He initiated his career working as a Sugarcane Breeder at UFSCar, one of the Federal Universities in Brazil that is responsible for RIDESA, a public country-wide network working on Plant Improvement of Sugarcane. During his Msc and Ph.D. at ESALQ/USP (2010-2016), João worked at several studies of plant genetics and breeding involving different crop species, such as Sugarcane, Sorghum, Rubber Tree, Common Bean, Cacao, and Sweet Passion Fruit. After finishing his doctorate, João worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist at Department of Genetics of ESALQ/USP (2016-2017). From 2017 to 2019, João worked as a Statistical Geneticist, Breeder, and President of the Biosafety Internal Commission (CIBio) at FTS Sementes S.A., acting on Soybean Breeding. He is one of the editorial board members of the journals Frontiers in Plant Science, in the Plant Breeding and Functional and Applied Plant Genomics sections, and Frontiers in Genetics/Ecology and Evolution, in the Evolutionary and Population Genetics and Statistical Genetics and Methodology sections. In this context, João has also given some assistance, as a Reviewer, to important journals related to Genetics (edited by Springer Nature), such as Theoretical and Applied Genetics, BMC Genetics, BMC Genomic Data, BMC Plant Biology, Molecular Breeding, Physiology and Molecular Biology of Plants, Plant Molecular Biology Reporter, Tree Genetics and Genomes, Tropical Plant Biology, Euphytica, Genetic Resources and Crop Evolution, and Discover Plants, as well as the journals G3 Genes|Genomes|Genetics (GSA), Scientific Reports (Nature), Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, Frontiers in Plant Science, Frontiers In Genetics/Ecology and Evolution, Annals of Applied Biology, Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, and Bragantia. In his last employment, João was the Coordinator of Sugarcane Breeding belonging to Centro de Tecnologia Canavieira (CTC), being responsible for the anually planned crosses and all stages of selection along the breeding pipeline, including genomic selection (GS) strategies for the clonal performance at different environmental conditions in Brazil (2019-2022). João acted as a Collaborator Research Scientist at Department of Agronomy belonging to Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), working on Genetic Mapping and Inbreeding Depression for Cassava (2023-2023). Currently, João is a Scientist Consultant and Managing Partner at RB Genetics and Statistics Consulting (RBGSC), as being the founder of that institution (2024-Atual). Moreover, he is a Guest Lecturer at Erasmus Mundus Master Program in Plant Breeding (emPLANT), belonging to UniLaSalle (Beauvais/France), being responsible for the classes related to Sugarcane Genetics and Breeding. Has experience in Plant Genetics and Breeding, with emphasis in Quantitative Genetics, Statistical Genetics/Biometrics, and Population Genetics, mainly acting on the following subjects: Genetic Linkage Maps and QTL Mapping (Linkage Analysis), Association Mapping (Genome-Wide Association Studies/GWAS), Genomic Selection/GS, Linear Mixed Models, Linkage Disequilibrium, Population Structure, Genetic Diversity, Coalescent Theory, Plant Improvement of Sugarcane and Plant Improvement of Soybean.
