Pessoa Física (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal) Birthplace: Brazil
Dr. Fiszman received his M.D. degree from State University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and undertook residencies in Internal Medicine and Biomedical Informatics at the University of São Paulo then emigrated to the US where he received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Utah. He was then a postdoctoral fellow at the National Library of Medicine and after a brief period as an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee, he returned as a scientist at the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (NLM-NIH). Currently, he is a Teaching Professor of Lifestyle Medicine at the Department of Medicine at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is also employed (part-time position) at Semedy Inc (Newton, MA) as Principal Biomedical Informaticist. Dr. Fiszmans research focuses on developing robust natural language processing methods for both biomedical research and clinical text. His early work on symbolic methods for processing electronic medical records, via an application called SymTex, has been recognized as influencing later developments such as i2b2. After that, he pursued research in symbolic natural language processing (with a program called SemRep) and semantic abstraction automatic summarization. These efforts were implemented at NLM in Semantic MEDLINE, which combines information retrieval, semantic processing, automatic summarization, and knowledge visualization for enhanced access to the biomedical research literature. More recently, his research has focused on applying natural language process to support real-time clinical decision support, literature-based discovery, and repurposing interventions (drug, complementary, and lifestyle interventions) for clinical diseases such as COVID-19 and Alzheimers Disease. Back in Brazil since 2019, he has been actively practicing internal medicine with an emphasis on Lifestyle Medicine, complementary and integrative medicine, whole food plant-based diet, and microbiome testing and analysis. In September, he presented his work at the 1st International Congress on Plant-Based Nutrition held in São Paulo, Brazil and at the VI Brazilian Symposium of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr Fiszman is a Fellow of The American College of Medical Informatics, a Physician Member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and Board Certified in Lifestyle Medicine by the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine.
