Professor of Literature at the University of São Paulo. He is the author of the books Fisiognomia da Metrópole Moderna: representação da História em Walter Benjamin (1994, Physiognomy of Modern Metropolis: representation of History in Walter Benjamin), grandesertão.br: o romance de formação do Brasil (2004, grandesertão.br: Guimaraes Rosas novel about the formation of Brazils identity) and Boca do Amazonas: sociedade e cultura em Dalcídio Jurandir (2020, Mouth of the Amazon: society and culture in Dalcídio Jurandir). This trilogy represents his main research project, a Cultural Topography of Brazil: from the Metropolis/Megacity through the Backlands to Amazonia. He has been Visiting Professor at Stanford University, Freie Universität Berlin, Núcleo de Altos Estudos Amazônicos (UFPA of Pará-Belém), University of Pernambuco (Recife) and University of Campinas.
