Medical degree from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1980), residency in Internal Medicine (19811983, Hospital das Clínicas, UFMG), and residency in Gastroenterology (19831985, Hospital das Clínicas, University of São Paulo School of Medicine FMUSP). Master's degree in Gastroenterology from FMUSP (1989) and PhD in Gastroenterology from FMUSP (1995).Postdoctoral fellowship at King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry (1996), and habilitation ("Livre-Docência") awarded by the Department of Gastroenterology, FMUSP..
