5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is the first precursor of heme, accumulated especially in the liver in some types of hepatic porphyrias, such as acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) and lead poisoning, due to a decrease in the porphobilinogen deaminase enzyme activity.
