Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (UPM). Centro de Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde (CCBS) (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal) Birthplace: Brazil
Graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Ceará (1967) and PhD in Pharmacology - University of Georgia (1974). He is currently a professor at the University of Virginia / School of Medicine, full professor at the Federal University of Ceará, member of the revalidation technical committee of the State University of Ceará, full professor at the State University of Ceará and coordinator of the State University of Ceará and emeritus professor of the Doctorate program at Federal Unversity of Ceara. Has experience in Pharmacology, focusing on Cardiorenal Pharmacology, acting on the following lines of research: effects of guanylin-like hormones, renal metabolism, diabetes and nephrotoxic effects of toxins. These guanylin-like hormones represent an entero-renal axis that regulates sodium excretion as a function of dietary intake. These hormones also participate in the regulation of satiety. We recently demonstrated the expression of these hormone receptors in human corpora cavernosa. Another important finding was that salt-sensitive Dahl animals do not express receptors for this hormone, which may contribute to the phenotype of these animals and its application in humans. These findings opened new perspectives for understanding salt-sensitive and salt-resistant hypertension in humans and other experimental animals. Because of these findings, the National Research Council recently approved a new project aimed at clarifying the role of salt in hypertension, which is CNPq researcher 1A for the next 4 years.
