Born in Sao Caetano do Sul, Brazil, Jose Estevam Gava holds a BA in music and is a guitarist. Developed musical career in the 1980s and 1990s, playing and participating in various music workshops, especially in Curitiba (PR) and winter festivals of Campos do Jordao (SP). In 1995, he got a scholarship to join the International Course for Spanish Music, Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Parallel to these activities, he attended specialization in art education, master in musicology and doctorate in social history, the latter two by the São Paulo State University. In 2003, began his career as a teacher in higher education, teaching disciplines in pedagogy and media courses in the city of São Paulo. In 2005, he joined the Federal University of Pelotas (RS), working in the courses of music. Since 2011, he teaches for the music courses at the Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba. In his academic researches he analyzed the bossa nova, having published two books on the subject: The harmonic language of bossa nova (Unesp publication) and Bossa nova moment (Annablume publication). He also published Technique and reading for the guitar, where he condensed his researches and practices as a teacher of musical instrument (UFPel publication). His main areas of interest are the history of art and music, with an emphasis on the history of musical and artistic avant-gardes of the twentieth century, history of MPB, music and media, music industry and interdisciplinary studies.
