Birthplace: Brazil

Silvio Luiz Cordeiro is an artist, architect, and archaeologist whose work unfolds within an expanded field where art, history, social archaeology, landscape philosophy, and the material practices and techniques of architecture and cultural heritage intersect. His practice is informed by a transdisciplinary approach that integrates artistic production with research grounded in both academic and field-based inquiry. He holds a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU) at the University of São Paulo (USP), as well as a master's degree and PhD in Archaeology from the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (MAE-USP). His creative output spans photography, drawing, music composition, sound design, field recording, screenwriting, and a substantial body of work in documentary filmmaking. Since the late 1990s, he has produced audiovisual and photographic essays that combine ethnography, social memory, Indigenous knowledge systems, and historical and archaeological heritage, often articulated through site-specific and research-driven processes. His films, installations, and visual essays explore themes such as territoriality, cultural landscapes, ruins, Indigenous cultures, and the temporality of place. These investigations reflect his commitment to poetic and critical approaches to space and memory. His academic and professional background includes architectural and archaeological projects in Brazil and abroad, as well as extensive work in audiovisual direction and cultural production. Between 2000 and 2006, he co-directed Olhar Periférico, and from 2014 to 2021, he led Museu Imaginário Studio, working as a producer, consultant, and curator of cultural and educational initiatives. In these contexts, he developed a wide range of audiovisual projects, educational programs, and workshops across Brazil, including collaborations with Indigenous communities. He has also taught courses and led seminars on archaeology, visual culture, and urban history. He is the founder and curator of MAIA Mostra Audiovisual Internacional em Arqueologia / International Film Festival on Archaeology, a pioneering platform in Latin America dedicated to experimental cinema at the intersection of archaeology, art, image, and sound. He is currently a researcher at the Centre for Studies in Archaeology, Arts and Heritage Sciences (CEAACP) at the University of Coimbra. He is also affiliated with the Image Politics Research Group (GPPI) at the School of Communications and Arts (ECA-USP) and with the Centre for Global Studies (CEG) at Universidade Aberta in Portugal. Cordeiro is the co-founder and coordinator of Antropocênica, an international, itinerant, and transdisciplinary forum for intercultural dialogue and collaborative research. Since 2022, it has brought together scholars, artists, and practitioners from Cape Verde, Germany, São Tomé and Príncipe, Portugal, Mozambique, Spain, Guinea-Bissau, and Brazil, fostering critical exchanges at the crossroads of archaeology, philosophy, and architecture. In 2021, he founded Estúdio Nômade, a creative space for interdisciplinary and experimental practices in visual arts and research. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
