Abstract

Nine years ago, while a postdoc at Imperial College London, I identified a Salmonella effector secreted via the SPI-2 T3SS that reduces MHC-II surface levels (Bayer-Santos et al., 2016). This commentary describes how this discovery came to be and discusses its implications in the development of my independent career. (AU)
