Abstract

The production of stable color centers in fluoride crystals (BaLiF3) by ultrashort high intensity laser irradiation was investigated. A comparison between the optical properties of color centers produced in samples grown by different methods was done. We were able to observe absorption bands at 260, 420, 632, 386 and 480 mm attributed to F, F-2, F-2(+), F-3 and F-3(+) centre, as the ones produced on these crystals by electron-irradiation. The formation of these defects in BaLiF3 is strongly related to the crystal growth conditions. The higher crystalline order favors the formation of larger clusters.
