Abstract

New closed form relationships for computing the temperature effectiveness and other thermal performance parameters of cross-flow heat exchangers with common configurations are presented in this paper. The so-called parallel and counter-cross-flow configurations are included, with one circuit and five to ten tube passes as well as with two and three tubes per pass and two passes. Two mixture conditions of the external fluid are considered along with three mixture conditions of the in-tube fluid. The numerical procedure used for obtaining the relationships has been evaluated by comparing its results with data from literature. The comparison has shown rather small relative errors of present results with respect with both closed form and approximate expressions from the literature. It must be stressed that the proposed closed form relationships are useful for computerized analysis of heat exchangers. (AU)
