Abstract

The innovative technologies have helped the spark-ignition engines to undergo a process of evolution in order to achieve lower pollutant emissions and better fuel economy. The downsized turbocharged direct-injection sparkignition (DISI) engines help to achieve these objectives. Moreover, the addition as a fuel blend seems to be a promising fuel for internal combustion engines due to its lower pollutant emissions and sustainability characteristics. However, the in-cylinder cyclic variations during combustion affect the performance of internal combustion engines. In this paper, the in-cylinder cyclic variations of a turbocharged DISI engine are evaluated for a wide range of engine operating conditions (i.e., engine speed, engine load). The paper includes conventional statistical analysis as well as wavelet analysis. The in-cylinder pressure (indicated mean effective pressure and maximum in-cylinder pressure) and combustion durations (flame development duration, main combustion duration and combustion phasing) are used to analyze the cyclic variability. The relationships between combustion durations and indicated mean effective pressure are analyzed by using cross wavelet spectrum (XWS). (AU)
