Population structure of the Fusarium graminearum species complex and mycotoxin contamination of cultivated and native barley in Brazil

Abstract

The presence of mycotoxins in food, including cereals cause significant economic losses. The Fusarium graminearum (FGSC) species complex is the main pathogen of barley, being capable of producing trichothecenes type B and zearalenone, important mycotoxins due to their impact on the economy, agriculture, human and animal health. Previous studies involving the characterization of fungal populations from native plants have demonstrated that these may act as reservoirs for pathogenic fungi, or new pathogens could originate and disperse from native into agricultural ecosystems. The objectives of this study are to characterize the population structure of the FGSC in cultivated and native barley of Brazil, assess the mycotoxin (zearalenone, deoxynivalenol and its derivatives) contamination of these plants; map the genes involved in the biosynthesis of trichothecenes and zearalenone in the natural ecosystem isolates; and elucidate the distribution of clustered genes that may be involved in the production of secondary metabolites. Further evidence supporting this proposal is discussed. (AU)
