Abstract
Sericin is a soluble globular protein, which externally covers the silk yarn (fibroin) and which has large capacity to absorb water, addition of anti-oxidant properties, antibacterial and UV resistance. Although treated as na industrial waste silk spinning process, the chemical and physical properties of this protein enable their use in various materials. The recovery and development of products from this protein may represent minimizing the pollution load of effluent from spinning processes and promote economic and social benefits to all significant sericulture chain. The objective of this project is to investigate the development of sericin particles from alginate and ionic gelation method for use in noble metal and Earth-rare ion adsorption processes. The sericin is extracted from the cocoons by physical processes in an autoclave and after splitting the freeze protein, adjusted solutions will be used in the preparation of the blend with alginate and production of particles, still evaluating themselves different crosslinkers such as genipin, poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and polyvinyl alcohol. The study of metal affinity of the particles obtained by the noble metal ions and rare-earth ions and the kinetic and equilibrium studies with higher affinities for the most promising particles is within the scope of this project, as well as their characterization before and post-process. Studies of the reuse of materials aiming at the recovery of metallic ions and the comparison of adsorption efficiency with other alternative and low cost adsorbents are carried out. (AU)
