Abstract

Introduction: An anatomical knowledge is essential to the surgeon and the specimen dissection is still the most reliable and safe way of learning. 10% formaldehyde is largely used for the specimen's preservation, however it causes excessive tissue stiffness. The use of fabric softener and the injection with colored latex allows an improvement of the texture of these specimens, resembling in vivo. A three-dimensional reconstruction of the arterial and venous network from tomographic acquisitions also allows a detailed study of these skull base structures. Objective: propose an experimental model in specimens using iodinated contrast for a detailed study of the skull base venous and arterial network, besides the dissection and simulations of endoscopic surgeries with a higher trustworthiness that is found in vivo. Methods: Eight head's specimens previously preserved in 10% formaldehyde will remain in a quaternary ammonium salt solution of dimethyl ethanol mono/dialkyl cetyl ester (fabric softener) for 72 hours in order to improve their stiffness and malleability. Then the venous and arterial network will be cleaned with saline solution 0.9%; finally will be injected a solution of colorful latex (blue and red respectively) and iodized contrast (Ultravist 300, 50 ml ampoule). Then, tomographic acquisitions will be performed for an angiographic study of the arterial and venous network.Expected result: Improved stiffness and cadaver malleability, ensuring a dissection closer to that obtained in vivo, in addition to a detailed study of the vessel network in tomographic acquisitions - making it possible to reconstruct both the venous and arterial networks three-dimensional.
