Synthesis and characterization of complexes formed between pesticide molecules and metal ions and their impacts on the environment

Abstract

The aquatic environment receives every day discharges of effluents contaminated by pollutants of many categories. The sources of pollution of rivers and streams that cross urban and rural areas can be associated with the use and occupation of the soil. Industries launch a wide variety of contaminants that are related to the types of raw materials and industrial processes used. In addition, a major environmental problem is associated with the indiscriminate use of pesticides, which are dumped into the waters of rivers and streams resulting in harmful effects on the environment. There are pesticides of distinct classes, with functional groups capable of interacting with metal ions. Examples of interest in this project are the pesticides chlorpyrifos, carbendazim, carbaryl, malathion, ethion among others. Once released into the environment, they can interact with different metal ions, available naturally or not, changing their effect (bioavailability/toxicity) on the various organisms. Studies focused on these interactions can provide valuable information about the ecotoxicological risk of pesticides and metal ions. The goal of this work is synthesize and characterize complexes formed between pesticides molecules and metal ions, in order to understand the behavior of these new compounds generated in the environment.
