Abstract

Ratoon stunt (RSD), caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli (Lxx), is one major disease in many sugarcane-producing countries due to yield loss and difficulty of control. The use of clean seedcane is an important step towards successful control of RSD because contaminated propagating materials is the sole source of primary inoculum. Hot water treatment is the most employed method to eliminate Lxx. Nevertheless, thermotherapy in Brazil usually employs 52°C for 30min, instead of 50ºC/2h, because larger amount of seedpieces can be treated. The problem is that Lxx is not completely eliminate. Thus, one important issue to clarify is the cost/benefit of the two conditions: (50ºC/2h), which provides better control of Lxx but it might have harmful effect on bud germination or (52°C/30min), which provides lesser control of Lxx with no deleterious effect. Therefore, this work aims to answer the following questions: 1) How important RSD is on currently cultivated sugarcane varieties?; 2) What are the positive features (on Lxx control and yield) and negative ones (on bud germination and seedling growth) when 50ºC/2h is adopted?; 3) What are the positive and negative consequences when the traditional thermotherapy (52°C/30min) is employed?; 4) Does the titer of Lxx affect efficacy of thermotherapy?
