Design of services and applications for IOT

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or '' things '' that have processing, sensing and data communication capabilities, allowing those objects to collect and exchange data. The Internet of things allows to sense and control objects remotely over the existing Internet infrastructure, creating opportunities for a more direct integration between the physical world and computer systems, resulting in greater efficiency, precision and economic, environmental and social benefits in various human activities. IOT has a broad applicability in the most diverse segments of human activities, affecting how we work and live. However, the wide availability of data does not bring by itself an immediate value. We need to transform the different data types into information and knowledge leading to a wide range of products, services and applications that will be available in the next few years. To design services and applications for IoT we need to investigate basic problems such as data analysis and characterization, fusion of heterogeneous data sources, and localization and tracking of different data types. This proposal deals with exactly that: the investigation of basic problems whenever we design services and applications for IoT. (AU)
