Abstract
The Fontan operation is among the surgical options for patients with complex congenital heart defects with an anatomic or functional single ventricle. Unfortunately, there are numerous complications associated with Fontan circulation, including lymphatic insufficiency and increased predisposition to develop interstitial edema. Objective: to identify the functional status of lymphatic vessels with images obtained by the Near Infrared Fluorescence Imaging technique in patients after Fontan surgery. Method: prospective, transversal and controlled study with patients after Fontan procedure and also with a healthy control group. The functional state of the collecting lymphatics will be evaluated using near-infrared fluorescence imaging. Thoracic lymphatic anatomy will be described using non-contrast MRI, and the microcirculation will be analyzed by venous occlusion plethysmography. To complete this evaluation, the cardiopulmonary exercise test and plasma norepinephrine and cerebral natriuretic peptide (BNP) measures will be done. Expected results: The study will demonstrate the relationship between congenital heart disease and the functioning of the lymphatic system. The greater understanding of this system and its correlation with the pathophysiology of the univentricular circulation will contribute (AU)
