Abstract

The demand for rare earth elements has increased mainly because of scandium due to its applications in aluminum alloys for aerospace and aeronautical applications, solid oxide fuel cells and the production of metal halide lamps, which is found in the most diverse types of ore. In addition to the ores, there is a record in the literature of obtaining scandium in residues of hydrometallurgical processes, among them is the Red Mud, from the Bayer process, where it is possible to find concentrations of scandium equivalent to a resource of this metal. The estimated amount of Red Mud generated worldwide is 4 billion tons, mainly due to the consumption of aluminum, and the same is disposed of in mining dams. From this, the present work aims to obtain scandium from the bauxite residue Red Mud. The first part of the work will be done in the characterization of the residue to determine metals concentration, grain size classification, moisture content and alkalinity. The next step will be acid leaching and variables such as temperature, reaction time, concentration and solid liquid ratio will be studied. (AU)
