Identification of key target genes for the manipulation of flowering in sugarcane

Abstract

Flowering is one of the relevant factors for sugarcane. Despite its importance, the knowledge of the genes involved during the photoperiodic induction in sugarcane is still scarce, and the investigation of differentially expressed genes under controlled photoperiodic conditions, in fact, still need to be explored. The FAPESP project (2016/02679-9) aims to study the transcriptome of a sugarcane cultivar during flowering induction via RNA-seq (RNA-sequencing) technique to identify differentially expressed genes. The data will be also mined to explore the development of molecular markers (SSRs and SNPs). The proposal presented to Sprint FAPESP call unites complementary expertise at the University of Warwick and the "Centro de Cana, Instituto Agronômico - IAC" a public sugarcane research institute of the Sao Paulo Government, in order to gain a greater understanding of the control of flowering in sugarcane, a globally important food & biomass crop. This proposal contributes to the ongoing FAPESP project (2016/02679-9). (AU)
