Abstract

There is great interest in the red-near infrared region of the spectrum due to its importance on energy photogeneration and bioimaging. This proposal describes the synthesis and application of luminescent materials in solar converters and bioimaging, particularly those with special luminescence properties as up- and down-conversion as well persistent luminescence. This project also approaches the new phenomenon of persistent up-conversion luminescence with important application in bioimaging. The persistent luminescence materials, which possess energy storage properties, will be applied to enhance the biomass production by microalgae. The up-conversion materials will be used to absorb near infrared radiation converting it to visible, reducing the transparency losses of solar converters. The down-conversion materials will reduce the thermalization losses by absorbing one high energy photon producing two lower energy photons, close to Silicon band gap energy. The application of these materials seeks the enhancement of solar energy usage. Finally, all the mechanisms from the emission and energy transfer processes will be clarified in order to improve the design of new materials. (AU)
