Abstract

Recurrent cases of newspaper destruction, duels, beatings and murders of journalists demonstrate how violence was a constituent part of Brazilian press in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many of those cases were linked to the publication of slanderous articles which, given the authors' anonymity guaranteed by Brazilian law, ended up victimizing mainly newspaper owners and publishers. In order to contribute to the Brazilian Press Culture History, this research intends to investigate how the legal institution of press anonymity was challenged in the courts by lawsuits judged in the Courts of Campinas, Bragança Paulista and São Paulo between the 1850s and 1930s.
